For years, iPhones were considered something of a safe harbor. Android devices took most of the heat when cybersecurity researchers warned about biometric vulnerabilities and injection attacks. A report published April 8 by biometric security firm iProov revealed that iOS injection attacks, the technique deepfake fraudsters use to feed fake facial data directly into authentication systems, surged by 1,151% in the second half of 2025, contributing to a 741% annual increase overall. The report, covered by PhilStar Tech on April 13, is a signal that nobody who uses a smartphone is standing outside the blast radius of deepfake fraud anymore.

Instead of calling you and pretending to be someone you trust, an injection attack feeds fabricated biometric data directly into the identity verification process. And according to iProov's 2026 Threat Intelligence Report, they're getting very good at it.
This isn't theoretical territory anymore. In one widely documented case, engineering firm Arup lost $25.6 million after an employee participated in a video call where every other participant turned out to be AI-generated. Not a voicemail. Not a text. A full video conference, populated entirely by deepfake avatars.
Research from the Ponemon Institute found that 41% of companies have experienced deepfake attacks targeting executives. Gartner research puts the share of cybersecurity leaders who have personally encountered deepfake incidents during video calls at 37%. And 1 in 4 Americans has received an AI-generated voice clone call in the past year alone.
Meanwhile, the AI tools enabling this fraud are increasingly free and require no technical expertise. Platforms like Kling AI can produce realistic deepfake video from just a handful of still images. The 2026 International AI Safety Report flagged by the United Nations put it plainly: zero cost, zero skill, zero accountability. That combination is why AI-driven fraud is growing faster than any other threat category.
If the visual deepfake is the face of this problem, voice cloning is its voice. The technology has reached a genuinely frightening level of maturity. With as little as three seconds of audio, AI can now replicate a person's voice with natural intonation, rhythm, breathing, and emotional range. Most people who hear a high-quality voice clone describe the experience as deeply disorienting.
The FBI has documented cases where criminals cloned a family member's voice to simulate a kidnapping, demanding ransoms in the $5,000 to $15,000 range. These aren't sophisticated operations requiring state-level resources. They're afternoon projects for anyone with a laptop and a motivation.
This is the part that often gets lost in the conversation: deepfake fraud isn't just about your bank account. It's about your voice, your face, your likeness, your ability to prove that something you did or said was actually you. On the legislative front, there are real signals of movement. In March 2026, Congressman Vern Buchanan and Congressman Darren Soto introduced the AI Fraud Accountability Act, a bipartisan bill that would create a new federal offense for using AI-generated impersonations to commit fraud. Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senators Tim Sheehy and Lisa Blunt Rochester. The bill has support from Microsoft, AARP, the Center for AI Safety, and the National Consumers League.
California's legislature is also moving, with Senator Josh Becker's Digital Dignity Act, introduced in February 2026 to strengthen protections against AI-generated defamation and impersonation. As of now, 46 states have enacted some form of legislation targeting AI-generated media. The patchwork is becoming a quilt. It's not yet a full blanket.
Legislation matters. But it always lags the technology. The law is trying to describe threats that evolve faster than a congressional calendar. And victims of deepfake fraud aren't waiting for the law to catch up.
